Marcus Thuram and Khephren Thuram are the sons of legendary footballer Lilian Thuram, who played for Juventus and Parma. Both brothers have made their way to Serie A in the past two years. Marcus joined Inter Milan, playing a key role in their famous Scudetto win and continuing his impressive form this season. Khephren, on the other hand, signed with Serie A giants Juventus this summer. This article will explore the journeys of both brothers in Italian football.

Marcus Thuram

Born in Parma, Italy, Marcus Thuram is the older of the two Thuram brothers. He first made a name for himself in Germany with Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he scored 44 goals and provided 29 assists. Marcus moved to Internazionale in the summer of the 2022/23 season, marking his debut with a goal and two assists in Inter’s 4-0 win against Fiorentina.

Since his move, he has established himself as one of Serie A’s top strikers. In his debut season, he recorded 13 goals and 13 assists, finishing the season as the starting striker for the French national team in the Euros. This season, he has taken his form to new heights, tallying 7 goals and 3 assists in the first 7 Serie A matches, earning the Player of the Month award for August. Thuram recently netted his first Serie A hat-trick in Inter’s 3-2 victory over an in-form Torino.

He is a proactive forward, capable of taking on defenders, exploiting open spaces, and creating opportunities for his teammates. Additionally, he is skilled at holding up the ball under pressure, using his unpredictable movement to keep opponents off balance. This season, he ranks among the top percentile of attackers in Europe (as seen above).

Thuram excels as a second striker, seamlessly drifting into central areas within Simone Inzaghi’s 3-5-2 system. A quick, technically gifted, and intelligent attacker, he is a key asset for Inter, known for his versatility and lethal finishing ability, making him a constant goal-scoring threat. He also possesses a notable physical advantage with his 6’4″ stature, making him a strong and constant aerial and physical presence against Serie A defenders. Combined with his exceptional speed and superb footwork, he is physically one of the most unique players in Europe.

Another feature of Thuram’s game that has endeared him to Internazionale fans is the partnership he has formed with captain Lautaro Martínez. Since Thuram’s arrival in the summer of 2022, the two have developed a strong on-field chemistry, with their complementary strengths allowing them to flourish together. In their debut season as a pair, they combined for a total of 41 goals in Serie A—Martínez contributing 18 goals and 9 assists, while Thuram added 13 goals and 13 assists. Their interplay has been a crucial aspect of Inter’s attacking prowess, with each striker directly assisting the other on multiple occasions. Many were concerned about Romelu Lukaku’s departure from Inter Milan, but Thuram has filled those boots excellently.

Khepren Thuram

Khephren’s move to Juventus carries a deeper emotional resonance due to his family’s history in Serie A. His father, Lilian Thuram, was a stalwart in Italian football, spending five seasons at Parma before transferring to Juventus, where he became a key figure in the club’s defensive line from 2001 to 2006.

Lilian’s time in Italy helped him earn a reputation as one of the best defenders of his generation. Khepren, in an interview with ‘The Case by Dante’ stated that his brother Marcus is: Lilian’s time in Italy helped him earn a reputation as one of the best defenders of his generation. Khephren, in an interview with The Case by Dante, stated about his brother Marcus:

“He’s my example, my favourite player, my favorite person on earth.”

Thuram can operate as a 6 or as an 8 and will likely have someone next to him to win duels and break up play. Locatelli, Fagioli, or the potential arrival of Koopmeiners could all be utilised alongside Thuram. Despite being 6ft 4, Thuram’s ball-carrying and driving abilities, as well as his good feet, have been likened to the great Yaya Toure by the Coaches’ Voice. Khephren’s blend of physicality, technique, and tactical intelligence will prove to be crucial to Juventus’s ambitions. Alongside new midfield additions Douglas Luiz and Teun Koopmeiners, Thuram will be looking to maintain The Old Lady’s early season form.

Thuram has featured in 5 of the 7 games so far for Juventus, registering 1 assist. However he has only played 180 minutes with most of those coming off the bench. There is still plenty of time for the 23 year old who is still integrating into life in Italy under manager Thiago Motta and for a club as big as Juventus.

As Khephren continues to make his mark in Turin, the Thuram family name remains etched in Serie A’s rich history. With Marcus competing for titles at Inter Milan and Khephren striving to leave his mark at Juventus, the Thuram brothers represent a new generation of talent following in their father’s footsteps. Their rivalry in Italy’s top league adds an extra layer of intrigue to an already storied competition, promising fans a compelling narrative that blends family legacy with football excellence.

In football, the only thing that matters is who wins: winners are the ones who remain in history. You don’t remember the beaten finalists, you remember the ones who lifted the trophy.
